We the undersigned petition the council to
• Immediately review all current and proposed CRSTS Active Travel schemes, such as the Broom Road / Wickersley Road Extension Corridor, with a presumption in favour of practical, high-impact pedestrian safety measures (improved crossings, traffic calming, wider pavements, safe routes to school) rather than prioritising dedicated cycle and bus lanes.
• Reallocate funding within the CRSTS programme to deliver the greatest safety benefit for the greatest number of residents, particularly the elderly, disabled people, families with children, and those who must rely on cars for essential journeys.
• Publish a revised borough-wide Active Travel Strategy within six months that properly reflects local evidence, based on residents’ feedback and the flexibility confirmed by Cllr Williams.
• Engage meaningfully with ward councillors and residents before progressing any further with controversial schemes.
• Report the outcome of the review to a future meeting of Full Council.
We, the undersigned residents of Rotherham, welcome the written
confirmation from the Cabinet Member for Transport, Councillor John
Williams, dated 28 May 2026, in response to a question from Cllr
Paul Thorp at Full Council.
In that letter, Cllr Williams explicitly states that City Region
Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) schemes can include
“new and improved crossings and traffic calming measures
which would be expected to improve pedestrian safety, regardless of
whether cycle or bus lanes are progressed.”
